I’m really interested in the technology of biometrics which is a variety of methods of recognizing human beings through the use of human or behavioral characteristics. It’s incredibly high tech and being used in a wide variety of applications from something as mundane as identifying members at tanning salons to biometric fingerprint safes to retinal scanning for entry into the country. It’s quite fascinating and becoming more and more common. It’s likely to become the only way identifcation is handled in the future. It’s much more accurate and also quicker than any other identification methods. But there are still problems to be worked out on many systems … ways that identification can be falsified and faked. Currently, the most controversial application of biometrics is for voter identification. Many countries are currently embroiled in challenges to the accuracy and integrity of their biometric voting identification. Only time will tell whether these challenges can be addressed.
